What is Culture Kitchen?
Culture Kitchen is the umbrella name for any of Culture Connect's work that involves food.
Culture Kitchen allows our volunteers to showcase their cooking skills, the food of their nationalities whils gaining skills in event management, team working, customer services, teaching, catering and much much more.
Our first event as an organisation was simply called "Culture Kitchen". This was an evening of Cultural food and music developed by our volunteers and sold to the general public. The event took place in the Skylight Cafe in Newcastle on 25th May 2011. It was a great success with over 35 people attending. The event raised in excess of £400 for Culture Connect.
More importantly though, the event was a chance for us to test our concept that food was a great way to bring people together. With an extensive menu covering dishes from countries including Afghanistan, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Eritrea, our guests were amazed at the diversity and quality of what our volunteer chefs had produced. We also had performances from our Senegalese and Gambian drummer volunteers as well as musical performance from one of our Eritrean volunteers.
Throughout the Summer of 2012 we were delivering a project called the "Culture Kitchen Cooking Schools" from the Beacon on Westgate Road. We are about to launch a new project called "Culture Kitchen in the Community" - keep checking the Culture Kitchen website or follow Nick on Twitter @ccuk_nick for more info.
Also we are delighted that one of our latest ventures, the Culture Kitchen "food fest fundraisers and murder mystery" are taking off really well. Check out the Culture Kitchen Website for more info www.culturekitchen.org.uk
